Vintage Conover 5' 7" Mahogany Grand Piano: $4,500. US Dollars
Photo of Conover Model 77 5'7" Mahogany Grand
Built in 1920, this Conover Model 77 Grand Piano, Serial #231515, bears a close resemblance to the Mason & Hamlin Model A. The Cable Piano Company of Chicago owned/controlled both the Mason & Hamlin and Conover names in the early 1920's, and as a result there are many similarities between the two. Conover was Cable's Artist Piano (top of the line) just like the Mason and Hamlin was the top/Artist piano for the American Piano Company. The rim and plate in this Conover are massive, just like in the Mason & Hamlin. The action is also very similar to the Wessell, Nickel and Gross type action used in the M&H . Both pianos feature duplex scales, full sostenuto pedals, and patented construction designed to help maintain the crown of the soundboard over the life of the instrument ("Tension Resonator" in the Mason & Hamlin, and "Crownstay" in the Conover).
Vintage Conovers are highly respected among piano technicians, pianists and rebuilders, because of the high quality of design and construction, similar to that of other high quality instruments like Steinway, Baldwin and Mason & Hamlin. The name Conover is still in use today, owned currently by the Samick piano company, and placed on pianos now made in Korea and Indonesia. This particular Conover, however, is the genuine article, built in the U.S.A. during the "golden" era of piano building.
This piano has the classic lines similar to other high quality instruments of the period, and no expense was spared in its construction. It has a big rich tone, and a very responsive touch. The mahogany veneers are quite striking.
The piano has been restrung and refinished (some years ago) and just recently has had new keytops and keyframe felts installed. It is in excellent structural and playing condition, -just recently tuned, voiced, and regulated. The soundboard, pinblock and bridges are all in great shape.
If you want big name piano sound, touch, and quality but don't want to pay a big name price, this piano is highly recommended.
We have additional technical and other info on the piano and larger, higher resolution photos upon request

Baldwin Louis XV Antique White with Gold Trim 5'8" Grand: $9,500. US Dollars
Piano's Personal History:
1970 Louis XV Antique White with Gold Trim Baldwin 5 '8 " Grand. Serial No. 190328
This piano was purchased by owner's mother. Owner is going to be moving to a smaller place and unfortunately cannot take the piano with them. It was originally owned by a Music Professor at Cal State Hayward.
It is in beautiful condition. The white finish with gold trim is a professional factory finish. The piano sounds great and has a big full bass, singing midrange and clear bell-like treble. This piano has recently had the recommended maintenance work performed including: tuning, voicing, regulation, hammer filing and cleaning.
Baldwins and Steinways are the two top concert pianos still made in the United States today. The Louis XV cabinet style is very popular, but few are still made. It is rare today.
The nearest new equivalent would be a new Baldwin 227 which retails between $44,000 to 71,000.
